Dreams & Past Lives
Dreams: Famously described by Freud as the "the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious"
I have to agree with Freud on this one. On more than one occasion a client has sat opposite me and when asked if they dream, has related a dream (often a recurring one) that so succinctly sums up their presenting issue. I thought they were joking when they said they had no idea what the dream meant. The study of the have always been significant in human history. They have been seen as warnings, omens or messages from the Gods. So much so that temples were built for the sole purpose of dream divination.
Human's have been around for at least 100,000 years and almost all of that time in small hunter-gatherer groups closely in touch with nature.
It's only in the last 2000 years we have lived in conurbation's and only since the industrial revolution have the towns and cities we inhabit become the sprawling artificial complexs we take for granted.
Small wonder then that our evolution has not had time to catch up with the changes in our life style. The symbols and scenarios of our subconscious stiving vainly to communicate with our consciouness during sleep. A time when our relaxed state enables pathways to open between conscious and unconscious states (a bit like hypnosis or lucid dreaming).
I see a recurring dream as the subconscious tapping our conscious mind on the shoulder. If we refuse to listen then it keeps tapping till we do!
Past Life Regression ..
Has been the subject of intense argument and debate since it would seem forever. Depending on the prevailing culture an individual was born into either accepted without question or fiercely denied.
While aspiring to keep my language as neutral as possible I am constantly astounded by the experiences that people access while in hypnosis.
The origin of these experiences I feel is immaterial. The images have to be proccesed by the brain in order to be related. So in that sense they are perfectly legitimate.
I do know that sometimes it helps people make sense of something that has been troubling them and allows the to regain balance and understanding in their lives.
